What is the Imagination Library of Louisville?

Imagination Library is a free program for children under the age of five. Participants are mailed a book every month, addressed to them, to help families build a library in their home at no cost. The purpose of Imagination Library is to get kids excited about reading and improve their future through education.

Who can sign up?

Children can be signed up from birth until their 5th birthday if they live in Louisville in the zip codes 40202, 40203, 40208, 40209, 40210, 40211, 40212 and 40215.

Imagination Library is available in other counties in our immediate area. Click on the "Sign Up" tab of this website to see if your child is eligible for one of these programs!

NOTE: New registrants should have at least three months before their 5th birthday in order to receive books. We recommend parents sign up their children as early in life as possible to get the full advantage of the program.

Why can only children who live in certain zip codes sign up?

We are starting this program in the heart of Louisville to serve a small number of children. As the program's success is proven and our funding grows, so will our coverage area!

What if I am interested, but live outside those zip codes?

If you live in Jefferson County, we hope to serve you soon. As we receive additional funding, we will quickly add more zip codes. It is our mission to eventually expand the Imagination Library of Louisville to every zip code in our county. Check back periodically for updates.

If you live outside Jefferson County, please click "Sign Up" at the top of this page to see if your child is eligible for a partner program in another area.

Is the program free for participants?

Yes. There is never any charge to receive books from Imagination Library. Your child's information is confidential and will never be used for anything other than the mailing of books.

Does a family need to meet a certain level of financial need in order to participate?

No. Families of all economic backgrounds are welcome to sign up free of charge. We want to get every single child in Louisville excited about reading by mailing them their own books every month.

How much does it cost to provide these books?

The cost of the program is roughly $2.50 per child, per month. If a child is enrolled at birth, it costs about $150 to send her one book a month until her 5th birthday. For $25, we can send books to 10 children in any given month.

Who is responsible for the program funding?

Delta Dental is the main sponsor of the Imagination Library of Louisville in 2017. The Rotary Club of Louisville also provided a generous donation. We have received several other small donations, as well. Our community partners - Junior League of Louisville, WAVE 3 News and the Jefferson County Public Education Foundation - continue to seek additional funding in order to expand the program and help more children.

How can I help?

You can help by spreading the word! We can now sign up 2,500 children in our second year. If you know families living in our eligible zip codes with children under the age of 5, tell them about free books from Imagination Library. Telling them about this free program can make a huge difference in their future and the future of our community. Send them a link to sign up online through our website.

If you want to help us expand the reach of our program, consider making a donation. Based on the cost of the program, a small amount can go a long way to help children in our community. No donation is too small! For just $15, you can provide books to six children for one month. For $150, you can sponsor a child throughout the entire program. Click "Donate" at the top of this page to contribute to the Imagination of Library through a PayPal donation.

What is the history of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in other areas?

In 1995, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly's vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.

Dolly’s Imagination Library became so popular that in the year 2000 she announced that she would make the program available for replication to any community that was willing to partner with her to support it locally. Currently over 1,600 local communities provide the Imagination Library to over 1,000,000 children each and every month.

Numerous studies show the program improves early childhood literacy, adult literacy, and especially kindergarten readiness. Read more at imaginationlibrary.com.
